Informationen on Protestant Theology
Theology students can choose between different degree qualifications. If you want to become a priest, you need to take the degree path culminating in a “kirchliches Examen” (ecclesiastical examination). In contrast, the academic degree of Magister/Magistra Theologiae is comparable with the “kirchliches Examen” in terms of requirements, however it is designed for students wishing to work outside of the state church. Unlike other degree programmes, theology is a subject where a Bachelor’s degree does not make sense and it is therefore not offered as an option.
If you want to become a teacher of protestant religious education, you can study this subject along with a second subject and complete the State Examination in teaching (Lehramt) required to become a teacher at a Gymnasium, Realschule, Hauptschule or Grundschule.
