Computer Science (teaching degree)

What is the degree programme about?

Do you like working with young people? Perhaps you are already involved in youth work? Are you interested in computer science and new media, as well as another subject? Would you like to pass your knowledge and enthusiasm for technology on to other people? If you've answered yes to all of these questions, the teaching degree programme (Lehramt) in computer science could be the right choice for you.

At the start of the degree programme you will revise and deepen you knowledge of computer science from school. Building on this knowledge you will then learn about processes and strategies used to solve many different kinds of problems in a structured way.

What can I do with this degree?
  • This degree qualifies you to become a teacher at your chosen type of school (Mittelschule, Realschule, Gymnasium or Berufsschule).
  • Alternatively, you may use the skills you have acquired for a career in adult eduction, more specifically in professional development.
  • Your knowledge of teaching methods and education science in combination with you computer science skills mean that you will also have good career opportunities outside of education.
What qualities and skills do I need?
  • You should have a passion for technology.
  • You should enjoy working in a team.
  • The ability to think logically and in a structured way is important.
  • You will need to be able to persevere when you are working on solving problems.
  • You should enjoy working with children and young people.
  • As a teacher you must be flexible as you will work with many different groups of people. You should therefore be good at adapting to new situations.
  • For a career as a teacher you should be empathetic and have a talent for teaching.
  • You should be willing to deal with new tasks, situations and challenges on a regular basis.
Good reasons for choosing to study at FAU
  • Courses on computer science and teaching methods take place on the same campus.
  • You will acquire good knowledge of both computer science and teaching methods.
  • In courses on teaching computer science you will receive a great deal of support from lecturers.
Potential challenges
  • You should not underestimate the amount of time you will need for preparation and follow-up work for lectures and for completing exercises, especially during the first few semesters.
  • Depending on which secondary subject you choose, you may have to travel between the Faculty of Engineering's campus and the locations where other faculties (Faculty of Philosophy, Social Sciences, and Theology, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Business and Economics) are based.
  • Learning to program requires a lot of work. FAU runs a Java programming course before the start of the lecture period that we recommend you take part in.
  • You will be expected to actively participate in seminars, practical courses and presentations.
