English (teaching degree)

Different types of teaching degree programmes

The teaching degree programme (Lehramt) in English can be studied for the following types of schools: Grundschule, Mittelschule, Realschule and Gymnasium. The content related to English for the teaching degree programme for Gymnasium is largely the same as the content of the English and American Studies Bachelor's degree programme. In teaching degree programmes for other schools the proportion of the programme devoted to English is reduced in order to focus more on education science.

Unlike in the Bachelor's degree programme, students of teaching degree programmes also study teaching methods and education science to prepare them for careers as teachers.

What is the degree programme about?

In addition to developing excellent proficiency in English, the main focus of the degree programme is on acquiring academic knowledge of linguistics, literary studies, and cultural studies, as well as teaching methods and education science.

What can I do with this degree?

The degree programme is designed to prepare students to teach English (and other subjects) at schools and is completed with the first State Examination that qualifies them to start teacher training (Referendariat).

Graduates may also pursue careers in other areas that require a university education, excellent proficiency in English, and extensive knowledge of English-speaking countries and cultures (see the description of the English and American Studies Bachelor's degree programme).

What qualities and skills do I need?
  • good language proficiency, as the teaching language is usually English
  • an interest in the English language and the cultures of English-speaking countries (in particular the United Kingdom, Ireland, the USA and Canada)
  • an interest in the academic side of the degree programme and not just the language courses – this includes a passion for reading and an interest in independent learning through reading and working with abstract topics
  • a talent for teaching
Good reasons for choosing to study at FAU

FAU's Institute of English and American Studies is one of the best in Bavaria and offers a wide range of seminars in all sub-disciplines of the subject. In addition, due to the wide range of subjects for teaching degree programmes at FAU, English can be combined with many different subjects.

It is important for students of teaching degree programmes in English to spend an extended period abroad in an English-speaking country. The Institute of English and American studies has many contacts in English-speaking countries and provides students with advice on planning and financing their stay abroad.

Potential challenges
  • There is a qualification assessment process for this degree programme. Information about the process is available on the Institute of English and American Studies' website.
  • The preliminary examination (GOP) must be completed after the second semester (after the third semester at the latest).
  • Students studying to become English teachers at a Gymnasium must provide proof of good proficiency in Latin and proficiency in another modern foreign language at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages when registering for the first State Examination. This means that it is possible to study languages during the degree programme in order to reach the required level of proficiency.
