French (teaching degree)

What are the differences compared to French as a school subject?

Unlike at school, in the teaching degree programme (Lehramt) the language, literature and culture of France and French-speaking countries are the main focus. These areas make up around half of the content of the degree programme. You will work on practical language skills – grammar, vocabulary, phonetics, translation, etc. – in additional courses.

Can I choose a specialisation?

You may choose a specialisation for the written assignment that is required for admission to the first State Examination (Zulassungsarbeit) at the end of the degree programme from the following specialist areas: linguistics, literary and cultural studies, and subject didactics.

What are the differences compared to the Bachelor's degree programme?

There is less focus on academic content and more emphasis on practical language courses, teaching methods and education science.

Can I study the subject without previous knowledge?

You must have good previous knowledge of French acquired through at least three consecutive years of French classes at school.

Differences between different type of schools

French can be taken as a subject for teaching degree programmes for Gymnasium and Realschule. For Realschule the proportion of the degree programme devoted to language courses and academic content is slightly smaller than for Gymnasium.

Particular features

You have the opportunity to complete a stay abroad, do placements and take advantage of the cultural events organised by the Franco-German Institute.

How do I learn how to teach the subject at school?

You will gain initial teaching experience and learn about the various theoretical and practical dimensions of foreign language teaching through seminars on teaching methods and through placements.
