What are the "Zusatzstudien Geowissenschaften im Lehramt" (Geoscience supplementary teaching programme) about?

The supplementary study program “Zusatzstudien im Lehramt” is a supplementary qualification for students of Teaching for Gymnasium or Realschule in the subjects of Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or Physics. It is also for students of Teaching for Mittelschule or Grundschule. It focuses on current socio-politically relevant challenges, e.g. resources, climate change, natural disasters, groundwater protection and GeoEnergy. The basis of the “Zusatzstudien Geowissenschaften im Lehramt” is the content of the “Lehrplanalternative Geologie (Alternative Curriculum Geology)” in the 12th grade of high schools in Bavaria.

What can I do with it?

With this course of study you acquire an additional qualification for the teaching profession. It is important to know that the State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research introduced the Lehrplanalternative Geologie in the Gymnasium of Bavaria in 2004. Since then, students in grade 12 have the possibility to choose between geography and geology as a subject, if offered. Anyone who wants to work in Bavarian schools is excellently prepared for teaching the geology alternative curriculum. The additional studies qualify further for geoscientific adult education or public relations, e.g., as a park ranger or in museums.

Requirements and interests
  • Fascination for System Earth
  • Interest in human-environment-geology interaction
  • Curiosity to determine the rocks in the field and to see today’s landscape in the geological context
  • Motivation to impart geoscientific knowledge in a way that is suitable for students
  • Having fun in combining theoretical with practical content

Since these are additional studies, it is necessary that you are enrolled for a teaching qualification like geography, chemistry, biology, mathematics or physics, or teaching qualification for middle school or elementary school. Otherwise you do not need to have any previous knowledge.
