Master’s degree programme for teaching degrees for Gymnasium (MEd)

What is the degree programme about?

The different systems for teacher education in Germany vary greatly. Many states have changed over to a two-stage structure (Bachelor/Master of Education). Teaching degrees (Lehramt) for Gymnasium in Bavaria have a similar modular structure but are completed with the first State Examination which qualifies graduates to begin teacher training (Referendariat) in Bavaria.

At FAU you have the opportunity to complete a Master of Education in addition to or instead of a teaching degree for Gymnasium. The Master of Education is an internationally recognised university degree. It opens the door to additional possibilities in careers in teaching and research both in Germany and abroad.

What type of Bachelor's degree do I need?

You can study this Master's degree programme with any of the subject combinations for teaching degrees for Gymnasium on offer at FAU. This applies to all subjects that are offered as part of teaching degree programmes for Gymnasium by the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Law.

Modules and degree programme structure

30 credits are completed in the fourth semester of the Master's degree programme. In this semester students complete their Master's thesis. The topic of the Master's thesis may come from any of the three areas studied in teaching degree programmes: the teaching subject, teaching methods, and education science. You must choose your own topic and ensure it is approved. You will need to leave enough time to discuss this with lecturers in advance.
