Mechatronics (BSc)

What is the degree programme about?

Mechatronics is an innovative and dynamic discipline with a high potential for growth. Many mechatronic products are an integral part of daily life: ABS, ESP, electric window mechanisms or car transmission controls, modern robots in industry, a DVD player or the controls of commercial aircraft.

Mechatronic systems automatically monitor signals and convert the collected data into force and motion. Mechatronics combines content from the classical engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering/mechanics, electrical engineering/electronics and computer science, forming a new discipline with excellent prospects. Mechatronics students must be able to think across individual disciplines, systems and technologies.

What can I do with this degree?

Many technical problems in increasingly complex systems can only be solved by applying approaches from many different areas and system engineering. Mechatronics engineers overcome boundaries with interdisciplinary knowledge and by looking at technical systems as a whole. With mechatronics you can start a career in

  • research, development, testing and optimisation of mechatronic products and systems
  • integrating mechatronic components in systems and products
  • manufacturing mechatronic systems.
What qualities and skills do I need?
  • Interest in technology and good general knowledge in mathematics. A fair interest in school physics, mechanics and in particular electronics and computer science.
  • Interest in how technical products work and how they are manufactured.
Good reasons for choosing to study at FAU
  • Placements and career options: in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, and in Erlangen in particular, there are many different companies where you can do placements or work as a student trainee to gain an insight into future areas of work. The automation industry initiative 'Automation Valley Nordbayern' alone offers 40,000 jobs in more than 200 automation companies in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region.
  • Male and female mechatronics engineers have equally good career prospects. FAU's degree programmes ensure you are well prepared for professional life.
Potential challenges

A high level of mathematical understanding is a prerequisite. You will discover potential challenges in the voluntary mathematics revision course which takes place two weeks before lectures start in the winter semester.
