Nanotechnology (BSc)

What is the degree programme about?

Would you like to know how to develop new materials for bone replacements or drug delivery (transportation of active agents in the body) or for improving solar and fuel cells and wind turbines? Thanks to recent findings in nanotechnology such materials can be developed. Nanotechnology is considered the key technology of the 21st century. It is a new interdisciplinary discipline which combines elements of the sciences and technology. New materials and micro systems are developed on the nanometre scale in nanotechnology.

This field is already part of our day-to-day life and is an essential part of our future. Nanotechnology is used in an increasing number of industrial applications, such as energy and environmental technology, medical technology, optics, microelectronics and the pharmaceutical and automotive industry.

What can I do with this degree?

Equipped with broad knowledge and skills in many different areas, nanotechnology engineers are in high demand in the development and application of new materials and systems. Nanotechnology is a rapidly expanding subject area, therefore experts in this field will always be sought after. You can work in

  • energy technology
  • the automotive industry
  • environmental technology
  • microelectronics,
  • medical engineering
What qualities and skills do I need?
  • good mathematical, scientific and technical understanding
  • interest in practical work
  • team and communication skills
  • ability to motivate yourself and be well-organised
Good reasons for choosing to study at FAU
  • The Nanotechnology degree programme at FAU is situated in an excellent research and business environment. You will receive excellent individual support. All categories of materials are represented by chairs at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
  • In contrast to programmes at other universities, Nanotechnology at FAU focuses on materials science and engineering.
  • The degree programme benefits from research with a strong international focus. There are many companies with interesting career prospects in the region.
Potential challenges

Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary degree programme. You must have a broad basic knowledge in physics, mathematics and chemistry, even though the degree programme itself focuses on materials and practical application.

Degree programme start date and application deadlines

The FAU website provides an overview of the current application deadlines as well as information on the selection process and how to apply.
