What is a supplementary programme (Erweiterungsfach) for teaching degree programmes (Lehramt)?

Philosophy/Ethics (Lehramt Gymnasium) or Ethics (Lehramt Grundschule, Mittelschule and Realschule) is not a stand-alone degree programme, it is a supplementary programme for teaching degree programmes for all school types. This means that it is only open to students of teaching degree programmes (Lehramt) as a third subject in addition to their other two chosen subjects.

Detailed information about supplementary programmes is available on our information page for teaching degree programmes.

What is the programme about?

In this supplementary programme you will learn the fundamentals of practical and theoretical philosophy. You will study applied ethics, deepen your knowledge through seminars and reading, and learn the teaching methods appropriate for the subject. If you would like to know more about what questions philosophy and ethics deal with, take a look at the information on the Philosophy degree programme page where you will find more details about the content and topics covered.

There are important differences in the supplementary programme depending on the type of school where you will later teach. This is clear from the fact that the name of the programme is different for different types of schools: 'Philosophy/Ethics' for Gymnasium and 'Ethics' for Grundschule, Mittelschule and Realschule. However, the differences in content are relatively minor. For more detailed information about the content and structure of the programme please see the Institute of Philosophy's website.
