Communications and Multimedia Engineering (MSc)

What is the degree programme about?

Communications and multimedia technologies have experienced rapid growth over the last few years and have attained high economic importance worldwide. This progress is mainly driven by theoretical achievements based on highly complex mathematical concepts and algorithms, and by the application of modern abstract methods. There are many examples in fields such as digital speech, audio and video coding, digital transmission, and communication networks.

In many cases, small groups of young researchers with outstanding intellectual and creative abilities combine their efforts and drive technical progress to market success. With this in mind, CME wants to provide you with a solid basis for achieving your individual goals. The four-semester curriculum starts in the winter semester and includes a thesis which is written over a six-month period.

During the first two semesters, the focus is on broadening and deepening the basic theoretical knowledge and establishing firm links with its application in communication and multimedia. The third semester offers ample opportunity to pursue individual interests by choosing from a broad spectrum of elective modules. Finally, the Master's thesis allows students to apply the knowledge they have gained to highly topical challenges in research and development.

All modules are taught in English and do not require prior knowledge of the German language. Nevertheless, acquiring knowledge of German is essential in order to open the door to a career in the local area, and therefore German language courses are an important component of the CME curriculum.

With Germany being one of the most productive industrial economies, engineers are always in high demand. Demographic developments and the ever-growing demand for young graduates familiar with the latest technologies in communications and multimedia lead to plenty of openings with attractive salaries for CME graduates. Aside from the traditional employers in the communication industry, CME students can expect to find numerous opportunities in industries whose competitiveness greatly depends on embedded information technology, such as medical technology, energy systems ('smart grids'), or the automotive industry – and the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region has many big players in all these fields.

What is CME?
  • A four-semester Master's degree programme in engineering taught in English
  • Designed for students with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, communication engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or physics

The CME Master's degree programme follows on from Bachelor's and Diplom degree programmes with a focus on information and communication technology. It leads students to cutting-edge research and development in the core areas of communications and multimedia technology and related interdisciplinary topics. The programme structure complies with internationally recognised Master's degree programmes and meets the requirements to qualify for subsequent doctoral studies. The four-semester curriculum starts in the winter semester and includes a thesis which is written over a six-month period.   • Engineering mathematics: linear algebra, complex analysis, linear differential equations, Fourier transform, Laplace transform, z-transform
  • Signals and systems (textbook such as Oppenheim/Willsky, Discrete-time Signals and Systems)
  • Communications (textbook such as Haykin, Communication Systems)
  • Stochastic signals (textbook such as Pillai/Papoulis: Probability, Random Variables, and Stochastic Processes)
  • Software: C/C++, MATLAB
Application and admission

The application and the admission procedure is organised into several steps:

Step 1 (Deadline: 15 March/15 May)*

Please send us all of the required forms (download) and scanned copies of the following documents via e-mail

  • your curriculum vitae (CV)
  • your secondary school leaving certificate and university entrance certificate (certified English version)
  • your university certificates and transcripts of records (certified English version)
  • TOEFL score report (minimum score IBT 79) or other proof of English-language education (e.g. IELTS or Medium of Instruction Certificate)
  • APS certificate (Chinese citizens)
  • GRE test results (if any)
  • certificates for English or German language courses or tests (if any)
  • recommendation letters from two of your academic teachers that have known you well

Selected applicants will be invited for a face-to-face or video interview. The interview lasts approximately 30 minutes and serves to assess the applicant's background and motivation for studying the CME degree programme.

Step 2 (Deadline: 15 July)

After the screening process you will be informed of whether you have been selected for admission to the CME degree programme. If so, you will be asked to submit your formal application documents via the online application portal for Master's degree programmes at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg.

*The first deadline is for students who have to apply for a visa before arriving in Germany

International Students
  • Tuition fees: At FAU tuition fees have been abolished since the winter semester 2013/14. Students have to pay 112 euros for student services.
  • Visa: Before coming to Germany you need to check the visa requirements for your case. For further information please see the visa information provided by DAAD.
  • Work permit: If you are interested in extending your financial resources by working in Germany, you should consult this page to find out how to obtain a work permit.
  • Health insurance: In Germany you will generally need to be covered by health insurance. Several major insurance companies have branch offices in Erlangen, such as Techniker Krankenkasse. For more information on the types of insurance offered and your eligibility you should consult the international office at the Faculty of Engineering, FAU's Central Office for International Affairs (RIA) Student Services Erlangen-Nürnberg also offers helpful advice.
  • Scholarships: CME does not currently offer full scholarships. Interested students can apply for scholarships via organisations such as DAAD or BAYHOST. See also the scholarships page on the Faculty of Engineering's website.
